Winter driving brings added risks

Heavy snowfalls and freezing temperatures can make winter driving in Sioux Falls challenging. Accidents can happen if you or another driver fails to account for the conditions.

Adjust your driving for the conditions

Here are some things you can do to reduce the chance of a winter car crash injury:

  • Buckle up: You should always drive with your seat belt secured regardless of the season. With the increased risk of an accident in winter, it is even more essential.
  • Slow down: Road surfaces offer less grip in winter. The consequences of hitting a patch of ice at 50 mph could be far worse than hitting it at 30 mph. Braking distances are also greater than usual.
  • Choose your route carefully: Snowplows make certain roads their priority. While smaller roads may offer time-saving in summer, they are less likely to be cleared, and you could be stranded for a long time if you break down or suffer an accident.
  • Carry an emergency kit: If you break down, warning triangles will alert other drivers of your presence and reduce the chance they crash into you.
  • Use your headlights: Your lights help you stand out in the low winter light. Keep them on all day long when driving.
  • Check your insurance: Forgetting to renew your policy could have even more severe consequences in winter when accidents are more likely to happen.

Taking personal steps to drive safely is one part of the equation. Be aware that not all drivers will be as cautious as you. There is a greater chance than ever that another driver loses control and crashes into you during winter, causing you an injury needing compensation.
