Is bracing for impact in a car accident a good idea?

On Behalf of | Jan 10, 2023 | Car Accidents

If you see you are about to be involved in a car accident and there is no way to avoid it, there is little you can do.

At this moment, you may brace yourself for impact. However, if you have heard this is not a good idea, you may have second thoughts. Is staying limp and not tensing your muscles really a good idea? Should you prepare for the inevitable impact? Find out what is best and what can help reduce injuries caused by the accident here.

Bracing for impact may help reduce the possibility of more serious injuries

Medical experts claim that bracing for impact is a good idea. Your muscles can help to protect the rest of your body and prevent injury to your spine or the tearing of ligaments and tendons.

Bracing can also help prevent catastrophic injuries, even if it causes smaller injuries. For example, if you reach out with your arm and brace it against a dashboard, it can cause it to break. This is one reason some people say you should stay limp.

While this may happen, bracing yourself with your arm will prevent you from impacting your head, neck or chest. In most cases, it is better to have a broken arm than a TBI (traumatic brain injury) or spinal cord injury that may cause paralysis.

Preventing more serious injuries in car accidents

Bracing for impact is not a way to eliminate injuries in a car accident. However, it can help prevent more serious injuries to more sensitive parts of your body. If you are involved in a car accident caused by someone else’s fault or recklessness, you have legal rights to recover compensation. Knowing what these are is beneficial in this situation.
