On-the-job back injuries: Prevention isn’t easy

On Behalf of | Apr 5, 2021 | Worker's Compensation

Back injuries are common for many workers, so it’s imperative that anyone who’s working knows about ways they can protect their back. Employers should also know these so they can take steps to reduce the chance that their employees will suffer a serious back injury while working.

There are many points that must be addressed to help keep workers safe. Everything from the right use of body mechanics to the right equipment for the job can play into a worker’s safety.

How can employers keep workers safe from back injuries?

All businesses must have a specific protocol that requires workers to have assistance when they lift heavy or bulky objects. This includes using team lifting techniques, instructions on the proper way to lift heavy objects and making sure that each new employee has the right training.

Managers should also make an effort to stop bad behavior when they see it — including reminding workers when they should be using braces and straps.

Are all back injuries noticed right away?

While some back injuries are instantly apparent, many workers won’t realize that they’re having back problems. until after the condition becomes serious because the damage is cumulative or sets in hours after the actual trauma. They may think that the back pain and stiffness that they have after a shift are normal.

This isn’t the case. Pain could be a sign that there is a cumulative trauma injury, which gets progressively worse as time progresses. Anyone who suffers a back injury at work, even if it’s a cumulative trauma injury, should ensure they get medical care. Workers’ compensation covers those costs and may help to provide other benefits, including some replacement wages if the injured worker needs time off to heal.

Unfortunately, insurers are quick to blame a worker’s back trouble on their age, old injuries or hobbies. If you’re having trouble getting your workers’ compensation claim approved, it may be time to speak with an attorney.
