If you’re a resident of Iowa receiving disability benefits that are not enough to provide for your family, then it’s good to know that help is available. If your SSD payments don’t meet your needs, your qualified family members may also receive benefits. Learn which family members can receive SSD benefits and how much they can receive by reading below.

Which family members qualify to receive SSD payments?

Your Social Security disability payments are primarily based on your earnings record, and a similar method is used to determine a qualifying family member’s monthly benefit. The following is a list of qualifying family members who may receive benefits on your behalf:

  • Your current spouse
  • Your divorced spouse
  • Your children, including a biological child, adopted child, stepchild or dependent grandchild
  • Your disabled adult children if they were disabled before 22 years old

Each qualifying member is eligible to receive a maximum of 50% of your earnings record in monthly SSD payments. A special formula will compute the amount per family member. There is a maximum amount that a family can receive.

How to get SSD benefits for a qualifying family member

One of the most effective resources you can use to get a family member their SSD payments is an experienced Social Security disability attorney. You can apply for benefits on your own, but that can be a lengthy and confusing process. An attorney who understands your family’s situation may be able to help you get the benefits you have earned for your family by guiding you through the application process.

Your qualifying family members may get up to half of your earnings record in Social Security disability benefits. A smart decision would be to discuss your situation with a disability benefits attorney to help you assess if your family members are eligible.
